Don’t Mess With Melaka
The first time we saw these signs that are dotted about outside public buildings, along the street and on hoardings I thought it was about Islam, don’t mess with our religion, a little aggresive but ooookay. JHubz thought it was somebody being a proud Melakan i.e don’t mess with us we will kick your butt. Both of us thought they were a bit incongruous in such a friendly place.
Apparently they are a take on the Don’t Mess with Texas slogan which who knew was about litter? Ha! It may have started that way but I think pretty much everyone now sees it as Don’t F**k with Texas! So er yeah ok Melaka, we definitely won’t.
We spoke to some locals who urged us to speak up about this as the powers that be won’t listen to them that it comes of as aggressive and totally not about litter, which is what they are trying to convey. Don’t litter in Melaka, yup missed that completely I am afraid, not that I am a litterer but the signs, mostly placed nowhere near a rubbish bin just made me feel a little uncertain and pretty clear that Melaka would beat me up if I stepped out of line ‘don’t hurt me Melaka!’. I get that they were going for a catchy phrase but in this case it hasn’t quite hit the spot.
Keep it Green, Keep it Clean!
Put litter in its place! Don’t trash mother earth!
Slam dunk the junk!
Don’t be a Litterbug!
Or the ever clear Don’t litter!
